Samuel Williams was an early member of the church mentioned in the [[Doctrine and Covenants]]. He was born March 22, 1789, in Russell, Massachusetts. Williams was living in Kirtland when the saints began to arrive. He converted to the Church and followed a group to Missouri. His time there was brief, as he was forced to flee the state on account of the religious persecution. He lived in Nauvoo, and there he was called to be a counselor to [[John Hicks]] in the Nauvoo [[Elder|Elder's Quorum Presidency]][http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/124/137] When Hicks later apostatized from the church, Samuel filled his place as elder's quorum president.
