Arland Thornton is an American sociologist who specializes in the study of marriage and family. He has been the director of the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan since 2004.Thornton received his bachelor's degree at Brigham Young University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
In 1995 Thornton received two awards from the American Sociological Association for his book Social Change and the Family in Taiwan. Besides Taiwan, Thornton has also done studies in Nepal.
Thornton is a Latter-day Saint.
