Linda Margetts: Mormon Musician
Linda Swenson Margetts is a Temple Square organist, a position she has held since 1984. She is also a Tabernacle organist. She is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Margetts, born in 1948, earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in organ performance from Brigham Young University. She earned her PhD in music composition from the University of Utah, where she was also an adjunct assistant professor in organ. She is a former faculty member of Utah State University and taught at the Summer Workshop on Church Music at Brigham Young University for more than 20 years.
As a Tabernacle organist, she performs with the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, Temple Square Chorale, and Bells on Temple Square and presents daily 30-minute organ recitals in the Tabernacle and the Conference Center. She has presented recitals throughout the United States and Canada and in venues in Vienna and Jerusalem. She also teaches music theory in the 16-week Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square training school each winter.
Margetts is a Fellow of the American Guild of Organists where she has served as an organ judge and held leadership positions. She served two years as Dean of the Salt Lake chapter of the guild and five years as the State Chairman for Utah. She also served on the selection committee for the new organ in the new Libby Gardner Recital Hall on the University of Utah campus. She has judged organists for the Utah State Fair Competition on numerous occasions.
She and her husband, Bert, are the parents of six children.
