The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints encourages Families to live within their means and to strive to be as self sufficient as possible. This includes avoiding debt. Latter-day Saints are strongly encouraged to build up an emergency supply of food, clothing, and where possible, fuel, to prepare for unexpected disaster or temporary loss of income. Fathers are expected to be the ones primarily responsible for providing for the family, allowing mothers to stay in the home. The Church recognizes that there are situations when mothers need to work. Church members are encouraged not to take mothers out of the home to provide their families with luxuries. Education is emphasized as a vehicle leading to more prosperity, as is the payment of tithes and offerings.

Tithes equal one-tenth of the family's income. Latter-day Saints believe in the admonition of Malachi:

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it (Malachi 3:10).
