Her first professional work was as a hair stylist with The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (1965–1966). She also worked for The New Dick Van Dyke Show, The Paul Lynde Show, The New Temperatures Rising Show, Charlie’s Angels, LaVerne and Shirley, Mork and Mindy, and The Brady Bunch.

She was the key hair stylist for movies such as Newsies, Maverick, Free Willy 2, Dante’s Peak, Host, Lethal Weapon 4, Money Play$, Christmas in the Clouds, Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles, See You in My Dreams, Friend Request, and Vamp U. She was hairstyles supervisor for Edtv.

Johnson was married to Bob Johnson until his death in 2006. They are the parents of four daughters and three sons. All of their sons — Bart, Adam, and Brad — are actors. In 1985, Bob and Charlene Johnson moved their family from Los Angeles to Midway, Utah. They bought an old flour mill and made it their home. Eventually they turned it into an award-winning bed and breakfast. Bart Johnson and his wife, Robyn Lively, bought the inn in 2005.

Johnson continues to work as a hairstylist, most recently for films Batman and The Lone Ranger. She is full-time innkeeper for the Johnson Mill Inn and Gardens.
