He was sustained as a member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy on April 1, 1989, and served until June 6, 1992, when he was sustained as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy. He also served as one of the seven presidents of the Presidency of the Seventy from August 15, 1999, to August 15, 2002. He was designated as emeritus General Authority on October 5, 2002.
