Sonnenberg was born on April 11, 1922, in Schneidemuhle, Germany. He immigrated to the United States with his mother, older brother, and younger sister when he was six years old. His father had moved there the year previous to obtain work. They settled in Chicago, Illinois.

John Sonnenberg was a General Authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in both the First and Second Quorums of the Seventy. He was sustained on October 6, 1984, and released on September 30, 1989. He also served as a stake missionary, high councilor, stake presidency counselor (Dallin H. Oaks served as the other counselor), stake president, Regional Representative, and chairman of the Chicago Illinois Temple committee.

Sonnenberg was born on April 11, 1922, in Schneidemuhle, Germany. He immigrated to the United States with his mother, older brother, and younger sister when he was six years old. His father had moved there the year previous to obtain work. They settled in Chicago, Illinois.

While studying at Brigham Young University, Sonnenberg enlisted in the US Navy and an aptitude test qualified him to attend the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. After he completed dental school, he married Joyce Dalton and they became the parents of seven children. He practiced dentistry in the Elmhurst, Illinois, area.

He died on July 1, 2015.
