Carol Clayson Mormon Scientist

Carol Anne Clayson is a senior scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, where she is director of the Ocean and Climate Change Institute. She was an associate professor and tenured faculty in the Department of Meteorology at Florida State University and was the director of the Geophysical Fluids Dynamics Institute. She also was a tenured faculty member at Purdue University.

Her research interests include air-sea interaction, remote sensing of the sea surface, modeling of the atmospheric and oceanic boundary layers, and energy and freshwater cycles. She has received funding for her research from NASA, NOAA, the Office of Naval Research, and NSF.

She is the recipient of an NSF CAREER award, the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, and a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (from U. S. President Bill Clinton).

She serves on several national and international panels, including chair of the GEWEX SeaFlux project, an international group of scientists working on improved estimations of air-sea turbulent heat fluxes from satellites. She is a member of the CLIVAR Phenomena, Observation, and Synthesis Panel and the AMS Committee on Coastal Environments. She is the inaugural leader of the WCRP Flux Task Team.

She has served on the NASA Science Review team and the NASA Decadal Survey, in addition to currently serving on several NASA Science teams. She also sits on external advisory boards for the University of Colorado Aerospace Engineering Sciences Department and the Los Alamos Laboratory Institute of Geophysical and Planetary Physics. She is also involved in outreach activities particularly affecting relationships between corporations and the climate science community.
