Conway B. Sonne was an executive with the Standard Oil Company (now Chevron). He served as a board member on several charitable and nonprofit organizations and was the author of a few books.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His article “Under Sail to Zion” appeared in the July 1991 issue of the Ensign. His book titles include Saints on the Seas: A Maritime History of Mormon Migration, 1830–1890; Ships, Saints, and Mariners: A Maritime Encyclopedia of Mormon Migration, 1830–1890; Knight of the Kingdom: The Story of Richard Ballantyne; What Would You Write; and World of Wakara. He was the son of General Authority Alma Sonne and penned a biography of his father entitled A Man Named Named Alma.
He served as a financial analyst and liaison officer with the United States Army Quartermaster Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was a trustee of the National Maritime Museum Association.
Sonne was born on December 28, 1917, in Logan, Utah, and died on June 30, 1995. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Utah State University and his MBA from Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Elaine, were the parents of four sons.
