Donald Q. Cannon is emeritus professor at Brigham Young University. His areas of expertise are in early Church history, especially New England and Nauvoo, and international Church history, especially Europe. He taught at the University of Southern Maine from 1967 to 1973. He began teaching at BYU in 1973 and at one time was appointed associate dean of Religious Education. He retired in 2007.

He was one of the editors of the Encyclopedia of Latter-day Saint History and Historical Atlas of Mormonism. He also edited some of the works in the Regional Studies in Latter-day Saint History series.

He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from the University of Utah and holds a PhD from Clark University, also in history.

Cannon was born on December 24, 1936, and is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a full-time mission to Germany. He and his wife, JoAnn, are the parents of six children.
