Earl C. Tingey is an emeritus General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was called to serve in the First Quorum of the Seventy in October 1990, where he served until he was designated emeritus status on October 4, 2008. He served in the Presidency of the Seventy from August 15, 1996, until August 1, 2008. In June 2001 he became the presiding president of the Seventy. After his service in the Seventy, he served as president of the Washington D.C. Temple from 2008 to 2011.
He served a full-time mission to Australia and was twenty-nine years old when he was called as bishop of the Manhattan Ward in New York City. He has served as a counselor in the Eastern States Mission presidency and presided over the Australia East Mission. He also served as a counselor in the Utah North Mission presidency and as president of the Utah Ogden Mission. He has also served as a regional representative. He has been an elders quorum president and high councilor.
Tingey was born on June 11, 1934, in Bountiful, Utah, and learned to work hard on his family farm. He holds a juris doctorate degree from the University of Utah and a master of corporate law degree from New York University. He served for three years in the US Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps and then worked as legal counsel for a number of corporations, including the Kennecott Corporation in Utah.
He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of four children. He has been active with the Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award.
