Stockton grew up in southern California. He loved nature, especially the desert, which led him into a career as director of design and planning with Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson. He designed animal enclosures that could pass for true wildlife settings. But the yearning to draw and paint, nurtured from his childhood, continued to pull at him and in 1999, he started to draw again, now informed by his deep understanding of the landscape in southern Arizona. In 2007, he left the museum to paint full time. His paintings focus on rural or natural landscapes of the western United States, especially the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts. His work has appeared in more than fifty local and national exhibitions, as well as in galleries in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah, and on the Internet.
Stockton took sculpting, drawing, and painting courses from San Bernardino Community College, Brigham Young University, and the University of Utah. He earned his bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of California, Davis, and his master’s in geographic information systems technology from the University of Arizona. He has studied with various artists in plein air workshops.
