Dinah Browne, a native of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, didn’t see snow until she was a freshman in college in New Jersey. She was 29 years old when she sat on her first luge, and she qualified for her first World Cup event in December 2000 at age 30. She set aside her career as an English teacher and spent the next two winters on the luge circuit in North America and Europe. She made history as the first black female to compete in the luge.
