Phebe Ann Baldwin Northrop Hawkes was one of the twenty women in attendance when the Relief Society was organized on March 17, 1842, in the upper room of Joseph Smith’s Red Brick Store in Nauvoo, Illinois.
She was born on July 4, 1803, in Derby, New Haven County, Connecticut. In about 1825, she married John B. Northrop, but was widowed in 1835. In 1837, she married Joseph Bryant Hawkes.
Phebe was the mother of four children. Her health was bad from about 1846 and she died in December 1950 in Kanesville (Council Bluffs), Iowa.
