Sarah Marietta Kingsley Cleveland was one of the twenty Latter-day Saint women who gathered in Joseph Smith’s Red Brick Store in Nauvoo, Illinois on March 17, 1842, to organize the Relief Society.She was appointed counselor to [Emma Smith]].
Sarah was born on October 20, 1788, in Becket, Massachusetts. She married John Howe on December 7, 1807, in New Haven, Connecticut. She was widowed in 1825. She married John Cleveland on June 10, 1826, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1834, she moved to Quincy, Illinois, where she was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She housed Emma Smith and her children in February through May 1839, after the Saints were driven from Missouri. She later sold her Quincy land to Emma (September 1841). She moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1842, then moved from Nauvoo in about May 1843. She then moved to Plymouth, Illinois in 1846, where she died on April 21, 1856.
She was the mother of three children.
Some sources claim that she was sealed to Joseph Smith although she lived with her nonmember husband John Cleveland.
