Grant Hardy Mormon Scholar

Grant Hardy is an educator and writer and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Hardy was born in Chicago and raised in California. He earned his BA in Ancient Greek from Brigham Young University and his PhD in Chinese language and literature from Yale University.

He is a professor of History and Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He has authored or edited several books on Chinese history and the Book of Mormon, including Understanding the Book of Mormon: A Reader’s Guide, which he published with Oxford University Press (2010).

In 2014, he published a 36-lecture CD/DVD course for The Teaching Company entitled “Great Minds of the Eastern Intellectual Tradition.” He included lectures on the scriptures of Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Daoism, Christianity, Mormonism, and Islam, as well as on the holy writings of smaller traditions such as Zoroastrianism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Baha’i. He is currently working on a second course, titled “Sacred Texts of the World.”

Hardy is a columnist for online Meridian Magazine. One of the things he is most proud of is that he has written or rewritten most of the articles on Imperial China for the World Book Encyclopedia.

Hardy and his wife Heather have two children.
