The Debra Bonner Unity Gospel Choir, formerly the Genesis Gospel Choir, is a traveling performance group whose main purpose is to provide a spiritual experience for listeners. The choir consists of primarily members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The music they sing is authentic gospel soul music. The choir performs at church meetings, community functions, and other social events. In addition to performing in various locations, the choir performs the first Sunday of every month when The Genesis Group meets. Their first single, “Charity,” was written for the 2016 BYU Women's Conference. The choir is also featured in music videos with James Curran (aka James the Mormon) and Alex Boyé.
Debra Bonner energetically directs the choir. She grew up in a Baptist home singing gospel music before she became a member of the Church. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a master's degree in vocal performance. She has been a professional voice coach for nearly fifty years. She was a guest soloist with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in 1996. In a KUTV.com interview, Bonner stated, “[The choir] gives [a spiritual experience for] African Americans and others who want to really feel the music and come to know the Savior by singing this music.”[1]
