J. Gary Daynes is a professor of history and is currently provost and vice president for academic affairs at Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina.

Daynes was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Bill and Kathy Daynes, now of Littleton, Colorado. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Prior to his appointment at Barton College, he was associate provost for integrative learning and vice president of strategic outreach and enrollment at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah. Prior to filling that post, he was the founding director of Westminster’s Center for Civic Engagement. He was also the director of service-learning for Washington Campus Compact and the executive director of Utah Campus Compact. He has been a faculty member at Brigham Young University.

He earned his BA degree in history in 1990 from Brigham Young University and his MA and PhD degrees in American History from the University of Delaware in 1996.

He is married to Kristine Schneider and they are the parents of four daughters.
