LeRoy Eugene Cowles was the president of the University of Utah from 1941 to 1946.
He was born on April 13, 1880, in Chester, Utah, and died on January 2, 1957, in Orem, Utah.
Cowles received his Ph.B. and A.M. degrees from the University of Chicago in 1910 and 1913. He came to the University of Utah in 1914 as assistant professor in the Department of Education. He later became associate professor, full professor, and department head. He also served as first dean of the lower division and dean of the School of Education.
The LeRoy E. Cowles building at the University of Utah was named in his honor. It originally housed the library.
He and his wife, Cecelia Etta Brown, were the parents of five children.
