On 4 April 2021, at the 191st Annual General Conference, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Cali Colombia Temple. The Cali Colombia Temple will be one of four temples in the country and will serve over 15,000 Latter-day Saints. The Bogotá Colombia Temple was dedicated in 1999. The Barranquilla Colombia Temple was dedicated in 2018. On October 6, 2024, President Nelson announced plans to construct a temple in Medellín.

Colombia is home to around 215,000 Latter-day Saints in nearly 260 congregations. Colombia was dedicated for the preaching of the gospel by Elder Spencer W. Kimball then of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in May 1966. After a mission was created there in 1971, Church growth in the country greatly accelerated. The first members of the Church lived in Cali and Bogotá. Nearly 12,000 Latter-day Saints resided in Colombia when its first stake (a collection of several congregations) was organized in 1977.

Cali is the second largest city in Colombia.

The Cali Colombia Temple will be built on a 3.14-acre site in the La Flora neighborhood of Cali. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 9,500 square feet.

On 23 September 2021, an official exterior rendering of the Cali Colombia Temple was released.

Groundbreaking Held

Elder Jorge T. Becerra, South America Northwest Area President, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, and offered a dedicatory prayer on the site. The event brought together leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, local authorities and community members, including Alejandro Eder, the mayor of Cali.

“On this day of dedication,” Elder Becerra prayed, “we ask Thee to help each of us to become renewed in our efforts to become true followers of Jesus Christ. Help us to live the gospel and more fully become converted to Thy Son.”

Mayor Alejandro Eder affirmed the city administration’s commitment to religious freedom and thanked the Church for blessing their city with a house of the Lord. “It will strengthen freedom of worship and religion in our city,” he said.
