Mark Buehner
Mark Buehner is an award-winning children’s book illustrator. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Buehner (pronounced Bee-ner) was born in 1959 in Salt Lake City. As a boy, he made books by drawing pictures and stapling them together. He took his first oil painting class when he was sixteen years old. He attended the University of Utah and graduated from Utah State University. After graduation, he and his wife, Caralyn, moved to New York City where they lived for more than four years. He began circulating his portfolio and landed the opportunity to illustrate The Adventures of Taxi Dog and its sequel Maxi the Hero.
More of his titles include Harvey Potter’s Balloon Farm, My Monster Mama Loves Me So, I Am the Cat, Niccolini’s Song, The First Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day in the Morning, and In the Garden.
He has collaborated on many books with his wife, Caralyn Buehner. Those titles include The Escape of Marvin the Ape, Fanny’s Dream, Dex, The Heart of a Hero (also published as Superdog, The Heart of a Hero), It’s a Spoon, Not a Shovel, I Did It, I’m Sorry, The Queen of Style, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Snowmen at Night, Snowmen at Christmas, Snowmen All Year, Snowmen at Play, and Snowmen at Work.
He won a “Best Picture Book” from Publishers Weekly for My Life with the Wave. His work has been featured on Reading Rainbow and Storytime on PBS.
His awards include a Parent’s Choice Award, a Children’s Choice Award, a Children’s Book Council award, a Utah Children’s Choice award, a Gold Medal from the National Parenting Best Books, an Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award, and ALA Notable Book designation, and a Society of Illustrators Silver Medal.
Mark and Caralyn are the parents of nine children and live in Salt Lake City, Utah.
