Vernon Law
Vernon Sanders Law is a retired Major League Baseball pitcher who spent his entire career with the Pittsburgh Pirates (sixteen seasons, 1950-1951 and 1954-1967. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, sometimes casually called the Mormon Church. Law was born on March 12, 1930, in Meridian, Idaho. He was a member of the National League All Star Team in 1960. He won the Cy Young Award, and led the National League in complete games that year. [1]
Law went into pro-ball right out of high school. His first game was June, 1950, when he was 20 years old. Law's win-loss record was 162 - 147; his earned run average was 3.77; he threw 1,092 strike-outs, and walked 597 in 2,672 innings. Because of his dedication to his religion, he was nicknamed "Deacon" and "Preacher" by the press and his teammates. Law has been the pitching coach for Provo High School (PHS) varsity baseball team. (PHS is located across the street from BYU where his son Vance Law was the head coach.)
