Eric D. Huntsman
Eric Dennis Huntsman is an educator, scholar, and writer currently working at Brigham Young University. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Huntsman was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and raised in upstate New York, western Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. He served as a missionary in the Thailand Bangkok Mission. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Classical Greek and Latin from BYU in 1990. He went on to receive his master’s and PhD in ancient history from the University of Pennsylvania.
He joined the faculty of BYU as an instructor of Classics. He became an assistant professor of Classics and Ancient History in 1997. He transferred to the Religious Education College in 2003 where he is currently an associate professor of Ancient Scripture. He taught at the BYU Jerusalem Center during 2011 and was appointed as the coordinator of the Ancient Near Studies program in 2012.
He has published several books, including God So Loved the World: The Final Days of the Savior’s Life, Good Tidings of Great Joy: An Advent Celebration of the Savior’s Birth, and The Miracles of Jesus. He coauthored with Richard Nietzel Holzapfel and Thomas Wayment Jesus Christ and the World of the New Testament: An Illustrated Reference for Latter-day Saints. He was a contributor to the documentary Messiah: Behold the Lamb of God. He also contributed chapters to From the Last Supper through the Resurrection: The Savior’s Final Hours and From the Transfiguration through the Triumphal Entry.
He has received several awards and honors, including William Penn Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, Honors Professor of the Year at BYU, and Alcuin Fellow at BYU.
Huntsman became a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in 2003. He also hosts “Mormon Identities” on the Latter-day Saints Channel.
He and his wife, Elaine, are the parents of two children.
