Janet Scharman
Janet Samuelson Scharman is a licensed psychologist and university administrator. She earned her doctoral degree in counseling psychology from the University of Utah.
Scharman is the fourth of five siblings that include Cecil O. Samuelson. She served as Student Life Vice President before, during, and after the term he served as president of Brigham Young University. Prior to her appointment by President Merrill J. Bateman, she was BYU assistant student life vice president and the dean of students. She has presented speeches while at BYU, including “The Lord Thy God Shall Lead Thee by the Hand,” “They Had Searched the Scriptures Diligently,” and “Seeking Perfection Without Being a Perfectionist.”
At BYU, she was also involved in overseeing the day-to-day operation of services of the counseling center, including the Women’s Services and Resources Office, Multicultural Personal Counseling, and Services for Students with Disabilities. She served as chair of the Institutional Action Committee on Women’s Advisement and as co-chair of the Educational Psychology/CDC Collaboration Committee.
Scharman is married to S. Brent Scharman, a retired licensed psychologist who worked as director of Evaluation and Training for LDS Family Services. Together they have written frequently on the challenges and solutions for blended families. They are the parents of a blended family of ten children.
