Spencer J. Condie

Spencer J. Condie is an emeritus general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having served in the Second Quorum of the Seventy from April 1989 to June 1992 and in the First Quorum of the Seventy from June 1992 to October 2010.

Condie was born on August 27, 1940, in Preston, Idaho, and moved with his family to Pocatello, Idaho, when he was fifteen years old. After serving a full-time mission to Germany, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, his master’s degree from the University of Utah, and his PhD in medical sociology from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a professor of sociology and ancient scripture at BYU (1969–1984, 1987–1989). His tenure was interrupted when he accepted a call to serve as president of the Austria Vienna Mission, which oversaw missionary work in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Greece.

He has held many positions in the Church, including Young Men president, bishop, stake president, and regional representative. He also served as a counselor in the Young Men general presidency. From November 2010 to November 2013, he served as president of the Nauvoo Temple.

He met his wife, Dorthea Speth, in Germany while both were serving as missionaries. About a year after he completed his mission they married and are the parents of five children.
