Kevin Young was named head coach of the Brigham Young University men’s basketball team on April 16, 2024.

“Kevin is not someone who just came to us out of the blue,” said BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe. “We had our eye on him for quite a while,” he said. “His character is impeccable. It is incredible how well-regarded he is by individuals all throughout college basketball and throughout the NBA. Kevin is a remarkable fit here at BYU. He understands what we’re all about here at BYU. He’s committed to doing the right thing.”

Young’s career had been predominantly with professional basketball, most recently as associate head coach with the Phoenix Suns, where he had been assistant from 2020 to 2021. He had been assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers from 2016 to 2021.

He made his professional head coaching debut with Oxford College in Georgia, then moved to Utah Valley University for a season, then on to Dublin, Ireland, with the country’s Super League. He was then with the Utah Flash for a season before moving on to Iowa Energy for two seasons. He then coached with the rebranded Delaware 87ers before being promoted to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Before accepting the position as head coach with BYU, he was given a five-year contract extension with the Phoenix Suns on June 3, 2023.

He was born in Salt Lake City in 1981, and played college basketball at Middle Georgia and Clayton State.

Young and his wife, Melissa, are the parents of two sons and one daughter.
