J. Reuben Clark Law Society
The J. Reuben Clark Law Society is sponsored by the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University and has over 10,000 members worldwide. The Law Society is open to law students, law graduates and attorneys, whether practicing law, teaching, in the judiciary, in business or not currently practicing. The chair of the Society in 2011 is Nancy Van Slooten.
The mission statement of the Law Society is...
- "We affirm the strength brought to the law by a lawyer’s personal religious conviction. We strive through public service and professional excellence to promote fairness and virtue founded upon the rule of law."
Religious Conviction
As per the Society's association with BYU, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormon Church, the Society rests on a framework of religious conviction, as follows:
- •Association with attorneys who share common standards
- •LDS Perspectives on the Law: selected essays by LDS attorneys on the practice of law
- •An invitation to attend annual satellite firesides on the legal profession. (Past speakers include President James E. Faust, Elder Boyd K. Packer, and Elder Dallin H. Oaks)
- •Participation in a semiannual reception between general conference sessions
- •Subscription to Clark Memorandum, a semiannual magazine on law and religion topics
- •Annual BYU Law & Religion Symposium
- •Web access to past firesides, articles, and local chapter information
- •Encouragement to stand up for legal/ religious/moral issues
Public Service
The Society participates in public service in the following ways:
- •Support for local bar association service
- •Mentoring of members of student chapters locally, nationally, and internationally
- •Encouragement to support community and legal service organizations and counterpart organizations of other faiths
- •Opportunities for leadership in local chapters and on the Law Society international board
- •Pro bono assistance to local ecclesiastical leaders following JRCLS guidelines or recommended by local ecclesiastical leaders

Professional Excellence
The J. Reuben Clark Law Society upholds professional excellence through the following means:

Events
The J. Reuben Clark Law Society sponsors many events. Among them are Chapter Events, Education Week events at BYU, Firesides, a Founder's Day event, receptions scheduled around Mormon General Conference bi-annual sessions, JRCLS Conference, a picture archive, Leadership Conference, and Orrin Hatch Lecture Series.
