Tim Gates: Mormon Musician
Tim Gates is a singer, songwriter, and member of the country group Due West. He is also a member of The Nashville Tribute Band. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Gates formed Due West with Matt Lopez and Brad Hull in 2004. They met at a party hosted by Dan Truman to which the three were invited. Hull started playing guitar and Lopez and Gates harmonized as they sang some of their favorite songs. Other people at the party were impressed and asked the three the name of their group. So the three formed Due West and have been together since that night.[1]
Since that night, the group came close to signing a contract with RCA Records Nashville, self-released its first single, “I Get That All the Time,” and created a music video that premiered on Great American Country (GAC). “I Get That All the Time” was the highest-ranking single from a self-released act on the Music Row Country Break Out chart in 2009. The video made it to the #3 spot on the GAC Top 20 Countdown. The group’s second single, “When the Smoke Clears,” was released as a music video in 2011. Both of the singles made it into the top 20 of Great American Country.
In February 2011, Due West created the album Forget the Miles with Black River Records. The group left Black River and raised funds to produce an independent album using Kickstarter. In August 2013, the group created an EP, Move Like That with producer Brandon Metcalf. It was the group’s highest charting album. Later that year they released a Christmas album, I Hear Christmas. Other singles include “The Bible and the Belt,” “Things You Can’t Do in a Car,” and “Slide On Over.”
Gates is from Utah and worked as a social worker with disabled people before he moved to Nashville. He believes music is a way to continue to help people. Gates and his wife are the parents of four children.
