Neil D. Schaerrer

Neil D. Schaerrer served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the fourteenth general president of the Young Men auxiliary, from 1977 to 1979. The organization had been under the direction of the Presiding Bishop since 1974. From the time Schaerrer was released until 2004, a General Authority presided over the organization.

Prior to his call, he established the Church as a legal entity in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia during the time he served as president of the Church’s Austria Vienna mission (from 1972 to 1975). He had been a full-time missionary in Switzerland from 1950 to 1953.

Schaerrer was born on April 12, 1930, and worked as an attorney. He also served in the U.S. Army military intelligence service in Germany from 1954 to 1956. He and his wife, Jane, were the parents of four children. He died on January 18, 1985, from complications of early onset Alzheimer’s disease.
