Lowell M. Durham Jr.

Lowell M. Durham Jr. was a businessman and educator. He was director of the Obert C. and Grace A. Tanner Humanities Center at the University of Utah.

He held a doctorate degree in philosophy and English literature from the University of Washington. He also earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the University of Utah.

Durham was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked as an associate editor of the New Era magazine. He also worked for Deseret Book where he also served on the board as well as president. He was with ZCMI for seven years as vice president of personnel and service, executive vice president, member of the board, then president and chief executive officer. With his father Lowell M. Durham Sr., he wrote the “As the Shadows Fall” (hymn #168), which was included in the 1985 Hymns of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was born on September 3, 1943, in Iowa. He died of cancer on September 29, 1997, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He and his wife, Linda, had seven children.
