During the 189th annual general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held in April 2019, President Russell M. Nelson announced that a temple will be built in Okinawa, Japan.

Okinawa is comprised of more than 150 islands in the East China Sea between Taiwan and mainland Japan. The Church has been in Japan since 1901. Japan, a country of 127 million people, is home to nearly 130,000 Latter-day Saints spread throughout 28 stakes and 261 congregations in the Asian island nation.

The Okinawa japan Temple will be the fourth Latter-day Saint temple in that country. The three Latter-day Saint temples currently in operation in Japan are the Fukuoka Japan Temple, the Sapporo Japan Temple, and the Tokyo Japan Temple (currently under renovation).

The Okinawa Japan Temple will be a two-story building of approximately 10,000 square feet and will be located on a half-acre site at 7-11, Matsumoto, Okinawa Shi, in Okinawa-ken, Japan. A temple patron waiting area will also be added to an adjacent existing meetinghouse.
