President Gordon B. Hinckley presented a list of six B’s in a satellite fireside to youth and single adults on November 12, 2000. His list included: Be grateful; Be smart; Be clean; Be true; Be humble; Be prayerful; and he expounded on each one. At the end of his talk, he offered a prayer on behalf of the youth. The list later was emblazoned on posters, bookmarks, and other media to help remind the youth and single adults of the importance of President Hinckley’s counsel in their lives.

In 2002, he expanded those points in the book Way to Be! 9 Ways to Be Happy and Make Something of Your Life. Those nine included Be Grateful; Be Smart; Be Involved: Be Clean; Be True; Be Positive; Be Humble; Be Still; Be Prayerful. Steve Young wrote the foreword. President Hinckley’s concluding thoughts, in part, were:

There they are, nine Be’s which, if observed, will bring handsome dividends to any young man or woman. They will add sparkle to your days and peace to your nights. They will save you from heartache and pain. They will bring purpose into your life and give direction to your energies.
