Derek A. Cuthbert

Derek A. Cuthbert was a General Authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from April 1, 1978, until his death on April 7, 1991. He served in the First Quorum of the Seventy.

Cuthbert was born on October 5, 1926, in the village of Sherwood near Nottingham, England. He attended Nottingham High School and studied at the University of London. He was a member of the Royal Air Force and was sent to Burma toward the end of World War II and later served in Hong Kong, India, and the Air Ministry headquarters in England. After he left the RAF in 1948, he continued his studies at the University of Nottingham and earned a degree in law and economics. He served on the governing body of the university and then worked for a petrochemical company.

Cuthbert and his wife, Muriel, were the parents of ten children. They were baptized members of the Church of Jesus Christ in 1951. Cuthbert helped establish Deseret Enterprises, an agency that directed the distribution of materials for the Church in Britain and Europe. He also served as a branch president and district president and served as the first president of the Leicester Stake and was the first president of the Birmingham Stake. He was then called as a regional representative. From 1975 to 1978 he presided over the Scotland Edinburgh Mission.

While serving as a General Authority, he served as a counselor to two presidents of the Sunday School general presidency.
