Milton Bennion

Milton Bennion was an educator and university administrator. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served as the sixth general superintendent of the Deseret Sunday School Union (1943 to 1949). He served as a member of the Sunday School general board from 1909 to 1949. He also served as a missionary to New Zealand from 1889 to 1892.

Professionally, Bennion began his career as president of the Branch Normal School, which later developed into Southern Utah University. He served on the Utah State Board of Education from 1898 to 1900, and in 1901 he became a faculty member of the University of Utah. In 1904 he became a professor of philosophy, then from 1913 to 1941 he served as dean of the School of Education. The University awarded him an honorary doctorate degree in education in 1931. He had previously earned a master’s degree from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah.

Bennion was born on June 7, 1870, in Taylorsville, Utah Territory. He died on April 5, 1953. He and his wife, Cora Lindsay, were the parents of ten children. His son Lowell L. Bennion was a prominent scholar and his grandson Steven D. Bennion has been president of Snow College, Ricks College, and Southern Utah University.
