Robert J. Whetten
Robert J. Whetten was sustained as a General Authority and member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 4, 1998. He was released on September 30, 2006. He has also served as a bishop, high councilor, and stake presidency counselor and presided over the Paraguay Asuncion Mission.
He was born on April 12, 1943, in the colonies in northern Mexico (Chuichupa, Chihuahua, Mexico), and was educated at Church schools in Mexico. As a young man he served as a missionary in Southeast Mexican Mission from 1962 to 1964. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology and Spanish as well as his master’s of public administration from Brigham Young University. Working in the banking industry, they lived in various locations in Mexico and South America. They also lived in El Paso, Texas, where he worked in banking, consulting, and electronics manufacturing.
He and his wife, Raquel, a native of Mexico who was reared predominantly in the United States, are the parents of eight children. They served as president and matron of the Colonia Juarez Chihuahua Mexico Temple from 2009 to 2012.
