Kelly Loosli: Mormon Animator
Kelly Loosli has worked in animation and live action production for more than two decades. He has worked in both the artistic and managerial sides of the industries.
He made his first animated film at age eleven. At the age of fourteen he made a clay-animated film, which caught the attention of Richard Paul Evans. He began his career as a clay animator for television commercials at the age of 15.
While attending Brigham Young University he received a student Emmy for his clay animated film entitled Nocturnal. He earned his bachelor’s degree in film from BYU. After he graduated, he moved to Los Angeles and worked for DreamWorks where he was over the sculpting/character design department for the first Shrek movie. He then went to Buena Vista Motion Pictures, which is the live action division of Disney.
Loosli moved his family back to Utah when his father-in-law passed away. He worked for Feature Films for Families in Salt Lake City. He also returned to BYU to teach in the film program in 1999. He was hired in 2000 to help create the animation program. He has spent the last twelve years working with the Center for Animation helping create Brigham Young University’s nationally recognized animation program while teaching animation, storyboarding, and screenwriting. In April 2010, he was named as one of ten professors included in “Leaders in Learning” in Variety magazine.
He and his wife and children live in Draper, Utah.
