Michelle King: Mormon Broadcast Journalist

Michelle Milne King is a former television newscaster and now serves as host of Mormon Times TV show.

She was the news anchor for Salt Lake City-based KUTV Channel 2 news. She was the longest-tenured woman in that position in Utah. She was with the channel from August 1978 until her retirement in November 2007. She had graduated from Brigham Young University in 1978, the year she hired on at KUTV as a part-time consumer reporter. She became a general-assignment reporter and noon anchorwoman before becoming one of the primary evening newscast anchors in 1984.

King was born in South Ruislip, England, and reared in El Monte, California. She entered Brigham Young University never having thought of broadcast journalism as a major. When she walked through the campus building where students were reporting the news for KBYU-TV, she signed up for an Introduction to Broadcasting class. She then worked for KBYU. She anchored the Newsroom 11 show and produced. At first she decided to anchor because it looked like fun, but later she appreciated the flexibility it provided for her home life—she is the mother of four children.

After her retirement, her husband, Steven, was called to preside over the Georgia Atlanta North Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They served from 2008 to 2011.

She became the host of KSL-TV’s Mormon Times a few months after their mission concluded. She wasn’t looking to return to broadcasting, but the message of the show appealed to her, as well as the flexible schedule. She said, “It’s a values-driven show and it’s really for anyone. I think members of any faith could get something out of the show.”[1]
