Joseph T. Bentley

Joseph T. Bentley was the tenth general superintendent of the Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Association of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; he served from 1958 to 1962. Prior to his call, he served as the first president of the Northern Mexican Mission. Ten years after his release he served as the first president of the Argentina East Mission. In 1976 he served as the first counselor in the Provo Utah Temple presidency. He also served for a time as general manager of the Improvement Era. He and his wife, Kathleen, were the first international missionaries to Budapest, Hungary.

Bentley was born in Colonia Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, on March 6, 1906. After graduating from Brigham Young University, he was a teacher and administrator in Utah and in Mexico. He began teaching in the accounting department of BYU in 1953, earned a master’s degree in 1955, and was appointed an assistant to university president Ernest L. Wilkinson. Later he was appointed administrator of Church schools.

He died on June 15, 1993. He was the father of six children.
