Steven Wheelwright
Steven Charles Wheelwright is a university professor and administrator. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as president of the England London Mission from 2000 to 2003.
Wheelwright served as president of Brigham Young University-Hawaii from 2007 to 2015, Prior to his appointment, he was Edsel Bryant Ford Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus, Baker Foundation Professor, and senior associate dean at the Harvard Business School. He was the Thomas Henry Carroll-Ford Foundation Visiting Professor at Harvard from 1985–1986. He joined the Harvard faculty in 1988. He is “internationally known for his ability to solve complex managerial problems and foresee future business trends”[1]. He retired from Harvard in 2006 and served with his wife, Margaret, as service missionaries at Brigham Young University-Idaho.
He was born in 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Utah and his MBA and PhD from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. For a year after his graduation, he was part of the faculty at INSEAD (European Institute of Management), a business school in Fontainebleau, France. He also taught at Harvard from 1971 to 1979 and was the Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield and Byers Professor of Management at Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
He is the author of books and coauthored several books with Harvard Business School colleague Kim Clark, including Leading Product Development: The Senior Manager’s Guide to Creating and Shaping the Enterprise (1995). He coauthored Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation with Robert Burgelman and Clayton Christensen.
He has consulted in business/operations strategy and was vice president of sales in a family-owned printing company. He serves as a director of Zions Bancorp, O.C. Tanner Company, Allegheny Ludlum Corporation, and CheckSum LLC. He has served as a director for several other businesses.
The Wheelwrights are the parents of five children. For some time they owned a cattle ranch in Star Valley, Wyoming. They have a home in Oakley, Utah, where they keep horses and cattle.
