Stephen Goddard

Stephen Hezekiah Goddard was one of the first five conductors of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and served from 1854 to 1856. Of those five, he was the only one that was also a vocalist.

He served as a warden of the School of Music at Nauvoo University.

Goddard was born on August 23, 1810, in Clinton County, New York. He was ordained a Seventy on June 9, 1845, and became a senior member of the 27th Quorum of Seventy.

He was among the first group of pioneers to arrive in the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. On the trek west, he was on the cannon crew, and led the singing around the campfire. He remained in Salt Lake City until 1897, when he moved to Fruitdale, California. He died a year later on June 9, 1898, in San Bernardino, California.

He was married to Isabella Goddard (died in 1839), Alamantha Goddard (died c. 1846), Lucinda Goddard, Zeruiah Norwood Goddard, and Mary Ann Goddard.
