Ensign Peak Foundation
The Ensign Peak Foundation, originally known as the Mormon Historic Sites Foundation, was originally formed in 1992. The Foundation was significantly involved in the preservation and creation of the Ensign Peak Park in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Mormon Historic Sites Foundation had its beginning in the early 1990s when Kim R. Wilson was called to the high council of the Salt Lake Ensign Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was asked by the stake president to assist a community group working to preserve Ensign Peak, the prominent hill where Brigham Young and other early Church leaders surveyed the valley two days after arriving in 1847.
The Foundation’s select group of attorneys, businessmen, and university professors raised $700,000 for the creation of a nature and historic park at the base of Ensign Peak. Kim Wilson is chairman of the board of trustees. Other members of the board include Richard N. W. Lamber, Kenneth R. Mays, Jeffrey N. Walker, Steven B. Bain, Robert S. Clark, Gerrit J. Dirkmaat, Steven C. Harper, Michael L. Hutchings, Heidi S. Swinton, and Richard E. Turley Jr..
After the completion of the Ensign Peak Park project, the members of the Foundation recognized that they had developed understanding and skills that could be channeled into other projects to help preserve the rich heritage associated with the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After the Foundation did business as the Mormon Historic Sites Foundation (MHSF) for many years, the Foundation in 2020 desired to be in harmony with the guidance relating to references to the Church and its history, and chose to emphasize its original Ensign Peak Foundation name.
The Foundation then became involved with the restoration of the historic Kirtland village which included a major road relocation project.
Since that time the Foundation has been involved in numerous additional projects and continues to seek out ways to bring significance to sites of significance in Mormon History.
The Ensign Peak Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) organization that operates independent of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The Foundation’s current and previous projects can be viewed on its website.
