Stephen L. Brower

Stephen L. Brower was president of the Church College of Hawaii from 1971 to 1974, immediately prior to it being elevated in rank and renamed Brigham Young University Hawaii. During his administration, the Aloha Center was completed. He also prepared for the institution’s transition by overseeing a significant redefinition of the university’s objectives and curricula.

He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology from Utah State University and his PhD in rural sociology from Cornell University.

Brower had been a professor of sociology at Utah State University and had been a professor of sociology at Brigham Young University, where he returned after his tenure at the Church College was completed. He was a professor sociology and professor at the Institute of Public Management and Health Administration in the Graduate School of Management.

He had also served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as president of the Colombia, Venezuela mission.

Brower was born on January 30, 1922, in Blackfoot, Idaho. He died on December 22, 2004, in Logan, Utah. He and his wife, Vivian, were the parents of five children.
