Margaret Curtis Shipp Roberts
Margaret (Maggie) Curtis Shipp Roberts was among the Latter-day Saint women who obtained a medical degree at the encouragement of Brigham Young.
She was born at St. Louis, Missouri, on December 17, 1849, graduated from the Woman’s Medical College in Philadelphia in 1883 and practiced medicine in Salt Lake City from 1883 to 1922. She helped establish Relief Society nursing classes and school and also taught classes in obstetrics and nursing.
She became a plural wife of Milford Bard Shipp in 1867 and bore nine children; however, eight of them died before her, five of them under the age of six. She divorced Shipp and in 1900 became a plural wife of B.H. Roberts.[1] She served a mission with him to New York City from 1922 to 1927, as he presided over the Eastern States Mission.
She died on March 13, 1926, at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, and was buried in Salt Lake City.
