Gary Liddiard
Gary Liddiard is a retired makeup artist known for his work in numerous movies produced in Hollywood, California, and for his work with Robert Redford.
Liddiard was born on April 13, 1949, in Provo, Utah. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Brigham Young University and intended on pursuing a law degree at George Washington University. But one of his family members helped him obtain a three-year makeup apprenticeship at Warner Bros. Studios, and his career path was changed.
Most of his work was done before computer-generated imagery was standard. The list of feature films he has worked on is lengthy, totally more than fifty, such as Scalphunters (1968), Tron (1982), Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983), Agnes of God (1985), Tango & Cash (1989), Cliffhanger (1993), Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), and The Bachelor (1999). He worked as Robert Redford’s makeup artist for most of his movies, such as Jeremiah Johnson (1972), The Way We Were (1973), The Great Gatsby (1974), The Candidate (1972), Three Days of the Condor (1975), The Great Waldo Pepper (1975), All the President’s Men (1976), The Electric Horseman (1979), Ordinary People (1980), Brusker (1980), The Natural (1984), Out of Africa (1985), The Horse Whisperer (1998), Spy Game (2001), and An Unfinished Life (2005). He was frequently the key makeup artist for such stars as Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, and Jane Fonda. He worked on a few television shows as well.
Liddiard is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His son, G. Dennis Liddiard, is a makeup artist nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the film Foxcatcher (2014).
