Phil Olsen
Phil Olsen is a former National Football League center and defensive tackle. He was drafted in the first round of the 1970 draft by the Boston Patriots. Before he could report to the Patriots, he suffered a season-ending knee injury in a College All-Star game.
He was traded to the Los Angeles Rams for the 1971 season. A second injury to his knee delayed his start by five weeks. He played defensive tackle by his brother Merlin Olsen’s side during the 1971 and 1972 seasons. He moved to defensive end for the 1973 and 1974 seasons. In 1975 he was traded to the Denver Broncos in 1975, where he played center through 1976.
Olsen moved to the Buffalo Bills team but suffered a third knee injury that placed him on the injured reserve list. He retired soon afterward.
Olsen brothers Phil, Merlin, and Orrin were all playing in the NFL in 1976, one of the few times in NFL history that three brother have played at the same time. From 1971 through 1978, he and his brothers Merlin and Orrin ran the Olsen Brothers All-Sports Camps for youth ages 8 through 17.
Although he was offered over 40 college football scholarship offers, Olsen played for Utah State University where he was a three-year letterman and three-year started. He was a two-time football All-American. He was inducted into the Utah State University Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the State of Utah’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. From 2003 to 2007, and 2011, he was a finalist for the NCAA College Football Hall of Fame. In 2000, he was selected by Sports Illustrated as one of the State of Utah’s Top 50 Athletes of the Century. He is a member of USU’s All Century Team.
After his NFL career, he went into real estate brokerage, real estate development ,and equity fund investing.
He is a Certified DynaMetrics Professional. He is also credentialed by the Society for Human Resource Management as a Senior Professional in Human Resources. He is president of Know Your Strengths, a human resource consulting firm.
Olsen is also an avid outdoorsman. He and his wife, Connie, have two daughters.
