Tom Christofferson
Tom Christofferson describes himself as “a happy, gay Mormon” and his 2017 book, That We May Be One: A Gay Mormon’s Perspective on Faith & Family, was published by Deseret Book.
Christofferson was raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a full-time missionary. After his mission, he left the church, spent two decades in a loving gay relationship, then returned to the Church. He had previously tried to live in a heterosexual marriage, but as he detailed in an interview with KSL, the marriage was never consummated.
He told KSL that what led him back to the Church was “feeling the Spirit and wanting to feel it more, wanting to feel it more consistently and more strongly.” He said he didn’t know how it would end, but felt “this is sweet and I want it.” After some time attending Church, he decided to make the changes necessary to come back to the Church. He was rebaptized by his bishop and confirmed by his brother Elder D. Todd Christofferson.
Professionally, he was in investment management and asset servicing. He served as director on corporate and nonprofit boards. He was also a founding board member of Encircle, a group providing resources to support LGBTQ individuals and their families in Utah County, and now serves as director. He is a member of the national advisory council of the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah.
He is also the author of A Better Heart: The Impact of Christ’s Pure Love (2020).
