During high school in Park City, Utah, he played football and soccer and added golf to his passion for mountain biking and motocross. He entered ski competition as a ski jumper in New Hampshire before his family moved to Park City. There he focused on aerials and won a Junior World Championship title in 1996. He missed the 1998 Olympics due to a knee injury.
