On October 1, 2023, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Calabar Nigeria Temple. Calabar, a port city in southern Nigeria, located in West Africa, is home to more than 657,000 residents. The temple will be the fifth in the country, joining the Aba, Benin City, Eket, and Lagos temples. At the time of the announcement, there were around 225,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in approximately 770 congregations in Nigeria, which organized its first stake in 1988, ten years after the Church’s presence was established in the country. The first temple in Nigeria, the Aba Nigeria Temple, was dedicated in 2005.[1]

The Calabar Nigeria Temple is currently in the planning stages. No location has been announced.
